Farm to Fork Fun!!!
University of California Cooperative Extension UC CalFresh educators love to share the fun with lessons about food from farm to fork! Ask a second grader, “Where does milk come from?” and hopefully the answer is “cows,” but all too often the answer is “the store.” Here in Tulare County, California’s largest dairy producer, educators encourage knowing how our food gets from the farm to the table.
Visalia’s Washington Elementary HEART program is just one of two Central Valley schools to receive a pilot grant from TCHAS (Team California for Healthy Afterschool). The California Department of Education, the UC Cooperative and 4-H are just a few of the collaborating partners ensuring that children gain a full understanding of agriculture, food processing, and nutrition. Along the way the children use University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources curricula, get physical activity, participate in taste tests, and oh yes, and have plenty of fun!
“We’re really looking to include the whole family in the process of healthy eating,” states Washington Heart Site Director Kathy Hays. Ms. Hays is part of a nutrition team for the HEART organization. This particular pilot is part of a comprehensive five year plan.
