Hello, my names is Gabriel Torres. On February 1st 2018, I started as the Viticulture Farm Advisor for Tulare and Kings Counties. I am originally from Colombia where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Agronomy/Plant Science in 2007. I worked as a researcher at the Colombian National Oil Palm Research Center (Cenipalma) from 2007-2010. I then came to the US and started my PhD. program in Plant Pathology at Michigan State University in 2010. I went back to Colombia in 2014 and serve as leader of the Oil Palm Diseases Program at Cenipalma for two years. After my graduation at MSU in 2016, I was invited by Dr. Andreas Westphal (UCR) to be part of his team to conduct nematodes research in grapes at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

My goal as Farm Advisor is to develop a strong outreach and research program to keep the grape industry profitable and growing in California. This is not a single person task, and that is why I see myself working in a permanent interaction with farmers, boards, packers, researchers, agricultural commissioners and all the people involved in this industry. Coming from a family dedicated to agriculture, I understand that this is not an easy task. However, my experience has taught me that things are easier when team work is involved. For this reason, having involvement is very important.

With your help, we will identify and prioritize the main challenges to grapes in the area, and together, we will look for the most reasonable solution.
